The much hyped “Scarlet Heart: Goryeo” premiered this Monday, and people just can’t stop talking about it. Not all the talk is good though. IU, our leading lady, has been heavily criticized for her acting in the period drama. So much so, that a representative for SBS addressed the comments in a public statement. The representative asked the audience to “view IU’s acting without prejudice.”
The director for the drama, Kim Young Sub, also addressed the viewers in an interview, saying “I don’t think that it deserves to be so severely criticized. I rather think that she’s shown an improved performance compared to her previous works.” He continued “I know that there is a prejudice about IU because she made her start as an idol, and also she has many anti-fans. I don’t believe it is fair for people to judge her acting based on this excessive prejudice. IU did a suitable job with her performance, and as that will be shown in the drama in the future as well, please continue to watch.”
I find it a bit odd, and counterproductive to have addressed this publicly. There is always criticism of one star or another. It is very seldom that production feels the need to defend it. There was negative talk of her in this project before the drama even finished filming, so one should naturally expect the talk to only increase once the show airs. I agree with the director, that she is doing a good job. Her character, as of yet, does not posses a lot of depth. That will most likely develop later in the plot. As for Hae Soo and who she is at this point in the story, IU personifies rather well. Maybe production should take a look at their over hyped campaign and the never ending talk that they created. There was bound to be some unhappy campers at some point, but to make a public statement on the matter will only validate the commentary. “Scarlet Heart”…Fighting!
