SBS announced a new drama called “Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim”, and Yoo Yeon Seok is the front runner for the male lead. This is such great news, since I wasn’t expecting to see him in a drama this year at all. Except for a cameo on “Mrs. Cop”, Yoo has not done a drama since “Warm and Cozy” in 2015. Seo Hyun Jin is also rumored to be up for the female lead. The actress just finished her unexpected hit “Oh Hae Young Again”.
The network seems to prefer medical dramas lately, since this sounds very similar to their current hit “Doctors” which is dominating the Monday/Tuesday time-slot. “Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim” is described as a human medical drama. Yoo was offered the part of a younger doctor who meets “Teacher Kim”, and learns about medicine and humanity. Han Seok Kyu (” Tree With Deep Roots”) is currently considering the role of “Teacher Kim”, who will act as a mentor to the young doctor.
Seo Hyun Jin is considering a role as a female doctor, who will rival Yoo Yeon Seok. The drama comes from writer Kang Eun Kyung (“Gu Family Book”) and PD Yoo In Shik (“You’re All Surrounded”).
I am hoping SBS solidifies this cast. It would be so exciting to see Yoo Yeon Seok opposite Seo Hyun Jin. They are both such powerful actors and have the potential to create really strong chemistry. However, I am not too sure about another medical drama. If done right, then for the most part they can definitely be interesting as in the case of “Doctors”, but there have been so many out in the past few years that it is getting a bit monotonous at this point. Let’s hope for an original story if the network must insist on another medical project.
